"The lights have not been changed in 60 years".......What?...a Justin quote.

The original lights were on about 100' high (or higher) poles. There was probably 10 or so lights on each pole similar to the old football field lights that used to exist at the high school stadiums. You could see them from many miles away at night. I am not sure when they changed them......but I am speculating in the 1980's(????). Maybe they used the same lights from 1939???

The infield used to be dark at night with minimal lighting received from the track lights.. When they changed the lights the FIRST time, the infield lighting became what it is as of today.

1080's right (of course). The current lighting was installed in the late 1980s or early 1990s so TNT could videotape WoO races there for later TV broadcast. The lighting before that was yellow-like and there were brighter "hot spots" all around the track. Compared to that, what's there now seemed like, "Wow - it can't get any brighter than this," when it was installed.

Now, can this new stuff evaporate water before it hits the track surface? I'm afraid we're going to need that quality tomorrow...

the reason they took out the old 80 ft. light polls was one Feb. when Jack Gunn came

back from the old winter nationals in Florida one of the polls was laying across the track

in the forth turn from high winds from a late winter storm, Jack didn't want to take chances

with old wooden poll so he had them replaced :ahhhh:
