I didn't see what happen. As I was working on my car I heard my car owner yell something about he thought he seen a break rotor blow up on a silver car entering turn 1. When I stood up and looked down that way it was Steve Wilburs #59. I went back to work on the car and then someone said the car was on fire.....Come to find out later threw rumor the fly wheel blew up and peices went threw the bell hosing and cut a fuel line. I don't know if any of it hit Steve or not

After talking with his brother Rob walking back up threw the pits we was told they was taking him to Hershey Med. by Life Lion and that he was badly burned. Over on the Super Sportsman message board a tow truck hooker reported: (05/11/08 01:55:32)
One of the Medics at Lincoln called me and said she talked to the crew transporting him and this is the scoop as of 10:30pm,
2nd degree burns on 80% of his body. They thought he would stay at Hershey Med but if he does need to be moved it will be to Lehigh. Will let ya know if I hear any more.

To Steve and family.......Your in my thoughts and prays I wish you a speed recovery and I'm looking forward to having you back at the track soon.

As for Williams Grove Speedway. I hope the speedway has learned something from this. This was during a 8 lap event, And theres wasn't anymore fuel then that. If this would of been a full fuel load it could of been much worst. I'm greatful for the fire crew and everyone invold you put your life a risk for the drivers. However what I do not understand is how the fire got to be so big and too so long to put out. That event showed me that Williams Grove Speedway is not able to handle such a thing should it ever happen again. I see a big cloud of smoke from turn 1 thinking "holly shyt" that must of been a big fire. Just to turn around a few second later to hear people say it's still burning. Then I climb on top of the trailor to see them pull the car from the fire. Which the fire followed the car up the track. They put the big puddle out and then let the car go down track towards the infield as i seen the left rear tire was burning.

This fire got to be to big for the fire crew at the track to handle. I know they did they're best. However Williams Grove Speedway needs to take a serious look at this and come up with something better so this type of thing never happens again. I know they did the best they could with what they had.

I agree with Kevin.....the Grove needs to get real fire protection. A guy came out of nowhere to pull him out and was not part of the fire crew. I know it's easy to criticize, but they looked like keystone cops trying to put it out.

My prayers are with Steve.........hopefully what has happened to him will bring some change.

Steve is in the Lehigh Valley Burn Center now. He's burned pretty bad around his ankles, not 80% of his body. He will be in surgery today.
