New Info

I was misinformed this morning a bit. I just got off the phone with Steve. He's a little doped up, but still his typical self. :laughing7:

He said when he came to a stop, the Fireman came running up and couldn't pull the pin. It was stuck and Steve was yelling for help. That's when the guy reached in and was trying to help Steve from the right side. He said he was in major pain during the ambulance ride from the track to Hershey Med.

He has 3rd degree burns on his right leg from the thigh down to his calf and a another smaller burn on his left leg. Tomorrow he will get Skin Graphs and then they will not be looked at for 5 days to make sure they take and there is no infection.

Please, if anyone knows who the guy was that was trying to free him up, drop me a PM with a name. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the update Root.....I knew sooner or later you'd talk to Steve. Also if you get a chance to talk to him again. I didn't hear anything about if any peices of the fly wheel struck any part of his body.

If anyone is going to start some type of fund for Steve to help cover medical costs or other bills, I'd be happy to donate as much as I can. I imagine he will have to miss alot of work through this ordeal.

I'm sure something will be setup by someone maybe Root or someone will take charge of that.

I made the post on the Sportsman board to give the info I was told. I am so glad it is no where near as bad as I was told. My concern with the whole event was not the fire crews performance. Every time they thought the fire was out more fuel came out and the flames started back up.

Where my concern is with the medical crew who was called three time to get to Steve after he was out of the car and they continued to sit in the ambulance and do nothing. One of the guys on another wrecker said he timed it and that Steve layed on the track for 6 minutes until they came over to him. I did not time it and that is only what I was told but I can say that I personally heard them told to go to him 3 times and saw them sitting in their vehicle doing nothing for a very long time.

It was not until they called for the backstretch ambublance to come out that the infield ambulance did a thing. To me that is the most unexceptable behavior I have ever seen at any track. Had our regular ambulance crew of been there, they would of risked their own safety to take care of Steve (or any other driver). I don't like the thought of people losing their jobs or anything but I do believe the people who have the job of caring for our drivers in an emergency situation should be accountable for their performance.

Maybe I am just used to seeing the best at our tracks and have come to expect that kind of care all the time, but their lack of TIMELY care was way wrong.

Just my opinion so please don't slam me too bad.

GET WELL SOON STEVE YOUR IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS!!!!!

I just spoke with one of the fire crew personel in t-1&2,,the one who pulled Steve out was little Mike , said pin was jamed in extinguisher,Josh pulled his and started extinguishment. . As far as the EMS I can not answer what happened there.
I arrived there late , but I did speake with an offical whom said the fire crew did a good job.
I can say that I am proud of the crew I assemble for fire crew(saturday night), and as noted in a previous comment, we are all local volunteers with a couple of fireline officers.

Was also just informed that there were 2 guys from the infield pits who were officals, i was told.
