My 5 year old daughter attended her first EVER race this past weekend and says "Daddy, I dont like when they crash, they could get hurt". Even a 5 year old gets it. Why cant adults?

I remember when Billy Kimmel was killed at the Grove. At first, I didn't think the crash looked bad at all and I was surprised they were taking so long to get him out of the car.

After that, I have no interest in seeing ANY crash. I don't much like Sammy Swindell, but if he's going to finish outside of first, I want it to be through racing, not a crash.

That was a sad thing with Billy!

I was standing along the guard rail that night in 3&4(which they dont allow anymore I believe) and it was right in front of us. I may always remember the sights and sounds of that crash. Ive been going to the races my whole life and I was pretty shook up that night.

You know, both crashes in which I watched drivers die at the Grove looked relatively tame by comparison to others - like Fred's, for example. Daryl Gohn simply backed into the turn three guard rail. That's what Billy did, too, and it didn't look bad until the Zemco car flew across and hit the top of his roll cage; I thought right then that if it made contact with his head, he could be seriously injured. I don't recall John Westbrook's crash looking (from the pit area) as bad as Doug Esh's wild wingless ride out over the turns one and two guard rail but the resulting injuries certainly differed. You just never know how a crash is gong to turn out, so cheering as one happens or right afterward could leave you feeling very ashamed in a few minutes.

I think we are all being a little narrow minded on this one. Even the most drunk Rahmer hating idiot dosnt really want to see Fred loose his life during a crash. If Im wrong and you are going to tell me that we have individuals attending races that truley hope that a driver they dislike loses his life while crashing, this person has major mental issues far beyond his alcohol intake and should probably be institutionalized. With that said I truley believe a big part of the facination that most fans have for motorsports is the POSSIBILITY of a crash. Lets face it everytime we go to any race there is a chance that someone could be injured , machines destroyed, and yes the possibilty of a fatality. I mean why do most race fans like watching the fastest division. When I attend my favorite weekly oval which happens to have 4 divisions I enjoy the division with the fastest cars, not to say the racing in the other three divisions isnt great, but there is somthing more exciting about the guys who are laying it on the line taking the biggest RISK. Apparently most racing fans feel this way because I doubt the Grove would have been packed this past weekend if THE WORLD OF PURE STOCKS had come to town. The racing would probably be much better, more passing, close race at the front, but the speeds would be a fraction of what a 410 sprintcar can produce. With speed comes excitement, that excitement is based on the fact that these men are strapping into a purpose built rocket cars with open wheels and a huge chance that when 24 are racing as fast as they can together somthing bad may happen and often times does. Ed C. if you truly never want to see a bad accident or fatality at a race you better stop going now, because unfortunatley its not a matter of IF someone is going to be hurt bad or fataly its WHEN. There is really no way to make motorsports completley safe although great strides have been made. Then again would anyone even want to watch or care if it was impossible for anyone to get hurt, the risk would be gone, without risk the excitement would diminish greatly. Im sure most of you know a driver personally, everytime I see a couple of the guys i know personally strap in i have nothing but imense respect for them and there complete lack of fear. Thes guys know better then anyone the risk they take, and thats why they do it, because not just anyone one has the stones to do it. If you remove the danger and make it completely safe any idiot with the cash to buy a car would be out there racing which would ruin everything.

I know there will be crashes. And I know there will be injuries. I just don't look forward to them and that is not what I go to the races to see.

Well said bkahn67!

But, no offense to any teams, but I really liked this:

i think most of us on here can say that wrecks look neat but the big picture is that i don't think anyone wants to see someone get hurt. that is just wrong by all means.
for one, i'm not a rahmer fan, but he is still a person, and has a family. if you watch that video in slow motion, you can see sammy come up into rahmer. sammy continues to do this all the time, and like i read in other posts on here, like the comment he made when he did the exact same thing to cody a few months ago, these younger guys will learn. well rahmer is no sprint chicken. i'm sure there is limited viewing area from the drivers seat, and i'm not making any excuses for sammy, but this is crazy. he has been driving and racing long enough, he knows the space you need to race like this. what's it going to take someone to get killed before they confront him about this. racing clean is one thing. seems like he doesn't care what or whom he destroys to get a win on stay on top of the points. maybe someone like cody needs to do the same to him, see how he would react. but these teams and all there equipment cost lots of $$$$$$. this time rahmer was **** lucky. he walked away. next time might not be so lucky. let's dial it down a notch sammy.

I think Kinser has confronted him quite a few times and Sammy lost every time. :thumbleft:

It cracks me up when I read people posting about Sammy causing a crash. Because, we all know, that no one else ever causes a crash to happen. Hmm I would list about 10 Grove/Port/Lincoln drivers who have caused more than one crash in their lifetime but I don't feel like expending the energy on my little fingers. Yes Swindell has caused more than one crash in his 40 years of racing but so have Kinser, Rahmer, Esh, Montieth, Dietrich and so on. Everyone just gets up in arms about it cause most people hate Swindell, mainly because of his smug, arrogant demeanor. Not everyone is gonna be a cuddly bear that everyone loves, like Jimmie Johnson of napcar. If you want to argue and say he isn't one hell of a driver, well, then you will lose that argument, like him or not. Enough on this and let's move on huh.
