We have had 53 spam signups the past 2 days so I have disabled new registrations. I am not sure how the bots are getting thru to complete the registration but I believe the updated version may have had some bugs in it to allow that to happen. I'm getting tired of all the spam signups so that's why I temporarily disabled registration.

If you are a real person and would like to register please email me sprntlover88h@comcast.net or sprntlover@yahoo.com and I'll enable registration temporarily.

Sorry for the inconvenience
Deb

I am on the main phpbb.com message board and I found that many many boards like this are getting spammed within the past 2 days. I just found a 20 page subject on this https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2165645 I am on page 3 and still reading it LOL.

Seems like there is new spambot software that can get thru everyone's different security questions no matter what they are. So until this gets resolved I will keep the registration disabled.

Sprintlover, question: I'm not trying to be a smarta**, but what exactly is a spam account, and how does it effect our beloved web-site???

Double D Fan. I will explain this as best as I can but I am not a pro at all this php board stuff and I'm not pretending to be LOL.

Spam bots get thru the security of the board and then post alot of spam and porn links etc. I have the board set up for admin activation so you guys don't really see anything. It is annoying tho on us admin's end because we all get emails whenever someone signs up or emails an admin. When you get that many or more in a short amt of time it does get rather annoying but the main thing is someone figured out how to get around the security.

That means the phpbb board people that make the updated versions have to figure out how or what made these spambots go around registration and get in. Just because I have it set up for admin activation doesn't mean crap if they find a way around it. I read in that thread that some of these type board have also disabled activation and the spambots have still gotten in.

That thread also says that it has just happened when they updated the newest version and something about Xrumr (sp)

That's about all I know, Andrew Rucker is really good with all this behind the scene board problems and he can probably explain better. I will just keep registration disabled until phpbb comes up with a fix since it is happening to alot of these type boards.

You are welcome. I don't know too much about these type boards, one wrong click and it gets messed up.....I have done that before LOL.

That thread on hackers is 24 pages long now and I have learned a little more on what that Xrumer software is about so I copied it here for those that have boards like these or anything else that is listed below that they can hack into. I did put the registration back on last night for about a half hr so someone could register and there were 2 spam signups so once that person signed up I disabled it.

These people that make up these softwares to spam boards etc need to find something to put their knowledge to good use.

I got this on page 23 of that thread so I copied and pasted it so people know more of what I'm referring to LOL........

Below are listed main specification and features of XRumer

Multithreaded submitting: over 50 simultaneously running threads possible!
Software can perform registration at forums (if necessary for posting messages) and automatically fill in the required fields. Upon successful registration XRumer posts the user-specified message and/or links.
The powerful built-in proxy-server checking script locates available proxy-servers worldwide, choosing anonymous addresses among them.
Software is able to work with lots of different types of forums and guestbooks: phpBB and PHP-Nuke with any modifications, yaBB, VBulletin, Invision Power Board, IconBoard, UltimateBB, exBB, phorum.org, wiki, different types of bulletin boards and even custom-written code.
Attention: unique feature – software works around EVERY possible type of protection from automatic registration, including:
- Pictocode protection (tickets, captcha), which look something like: "Enter the number you see in the box". Details...
- E-mail activation protection. Details...
- Java-script protection. Details...
During the process of posting a detailed log is created with precise path-links to posted messages so that you can check every link and every posted message afterwards.
A built-in proprietary "Question-answer" system.
A variations system, using which you can post up to 10000 messages all looking different but with similar contextual meaning and the user-defined hyperlinks in them. It helps to broaden the key queries (for Search Engine optimization) and protect your posts from being filtered out by Search Engines (that is, your posts will be included in SERPs).
If the forum has more than one category, the software chooses the one most suitable for the message, otherwise it sends the message to off-top, flame sections or the like, and in case those do not exist - to the most visited category on the forum.
BB-code can be used.
The following forum base processing tools are included: repeated links deletion, hit descending sort, service denial according to customizable black list, and various filters. The program informs the users about availability of new versions and possesses many other powerful features.

Deb, I can't tell you how much time I've spent cleaning up messes left by hackers. At work we run all the Microsoft updates and patches as soon as they come out and push anti-virus and spyware software out daily and we still get caught sometimes. I put a new PC on Comcast a couple years ago and within 15 minutes I had over 50 pings or attempt to access different ports on that PC reported through the firewall. A lot of this is coming from China and the Middle East.

Yeah it's ridiculous. Alot of these spams this time were from Russia & Pakistan from the looks of all the emails.

I was just looking up info on this software and it must have been around a while because the Xrumer 7 version is out (must have just been released on Fri LOL).

For those that have forums, blogs etc here's what it says about it on wikipedia....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XRumer

Update:
I have kept my eye on the phpbb forum and it's up to 31 pages now and I have done what some people have posted that is working for them. I have deleted all the inactive users which were ALL spam signups, I have made new questions & answers and have now put the registration back to active.

I will see if this works but if the spam bots start back up I will deactive registration until the phpbb people get this resolved with this XRumer spam attack.

Thanks
Deb
