Tunnel, please.....

Post by Swandogg » Wed Oct 08, 2014 7:36 pm

I know that I'm probably :deadhorse: here, but Saturday night at the Grove once again illustrated the overwhelming need for the track to put a tunnel under the backstretch. Yes, the bridge is iconic and a unique feature of the track, but getting trapped in the infield as time trials or racing starts when you're trying to get to the backstretch area absolutely bites :ahhh: :ahhhh:

I don't see that happenin any time soon. But In my opinion, the bridge serves no purpose other than being nostalgic. It's not like you can cross the track during racing anyway, so it's no better than not having one. What's worse, is letting the hurds of fans cross it when it is open, takes forever, which delays the program. IF they'd just let you cross the track, it would take 4 minutes instead of 15.
For years I was on the side of history and thought it was a neat thing there. But after going to the grove more and more over the past 2 years, the "famous" bridge is down right stupid, and a racing hazard. And so are the weekly fireworks. Come On Man! I mean Come On Pinky!

I love the nostalgia of the bridge as well, please don't misunderstand me on this. However, as a child of 70+ year old racing-fan parents, climbing the uneven steps of the bridge is quite a hazard to say the least(more so coming down, especially into the infield-side). What I'm getting at is could this be yet another liability situation should someone fall and quite easily be injured? It brings thought to possibly removing the bridge. Again, I'm all for the nostalgia, but there also is the racing danger-side of a car like the #27 in the 2013 Open weekend(I think it was that race) flipping wildly down the backstretch but fortunately coming up short of the bridge. Good post to talk about.

The track is not allowed to put a tunnel in so you might as well keep dreaming as it will never happen. :deadhorse: :chickendinner:

There is a tunnel in the first turn that can be used.

The track IS allowed to put a tunnel in, but regulations on slope would make the tunnel have to start out past the area where the sand mound is. That would be a looong tunnel and very costly. This info came from management , so I'd guess it is fact.

That sounds so ridiculous that it's probably true. :laughing7: With todays regulations, a new tunnel would probably have to be wheelchair friendly even though the bridge it would replace surely isn't.

I'm well aware of the tunnel in turn 1, but since I was nursing a sprained ankle that night, I didn't really want to walk any more than I had to  I DID try to get out before time trials, but the rope got put up right before I could get over :ahhhh:
