National Open

Post by bmd5229 » Mon Jul 20, 2015 1:10 pm

Was talking to Rico at Eldora and he said he is not sure he will make it to the national open since it's a point thing now. Does anyone have an idea how they will do the points?? Accumulated through Thursday and Friday, or separate the field for Thursday-Friday. All they said was points will lineup the fields Saturday. Thanks for the information!

I don't know the exact format they will be using, but I would say for sure that all drivers will race both Thursday and Friday. Even if 50 cars are entered, that would mean 25 each night and there would be minimal drama each night. I would also venture a guess that points gained Thursday and Friday would be added to set the C, B, and A Main on Saturday. Points could come from time trials, heats, and/or the A-Main.

These are just my guesses at this time.

More racing sucks? Rico doesn't think he has a chance because it is a points deal? :thinking:Are 3 days of racing too much? I must be missing something?

He wouldn't be able to make it Thursday. So he's missing an entire night of points compared to the other 40 something cars. He has a NASCAR race Thursday and cannot make it. What's the point in him coming if he'll already be behind the 8 ball, never ran the track before, and would most likely have to run a c or b main Saturday? I think splitting the fields up would be dumb in my opinion, because then you're paying 35$ for a normal night of racing, except with the dash. Was just curious if anyone knew, thanks for the replies.

I just want to repeat, the points thing is just my thought on how it might be done. More should be known this Friday. I do believe that all entries will race both nights.

Maybe points will set the first 12 spots for Saturday or something like that. Then teams that couldn't race both nights, like Rico, they would still have a shot by running only two nights, or even just Saturday.

I don't get trying to do a Knoxville kind of style when they don't even get 60 cars. Hopefully it is a full show Saturday TT, Heats etc...

I feel like Saturday will be like Knoxville. If you want to try for better points you can run if not you start wherever the points allow you. Only other thing or way I could think of with a points system. Wonder if the track an even handle all of that.

Agreed! The B,C, D mains don't pay like Knoxville does. In fact they don't pay squat. You line up Saturday night by points and some teams will leave(or not show up at all if they can't be there for the prelims). Not to mention, Saturday night is usually the most boring(racing wise) of the Nationals, at least compared to the first 2 nights. Expanding it to 3 days is fine; another outlaw show is good thing. You can't have a Knoxville format though if you don't have the purse and the cars. I guess we'll find out what they have planned and then I'll decide whether to go or not. Last year was the 1st Natty I missed in 18 years.

Totally agree. At Knoxville, every time your car is on the track, you stand a chance at making decent money. The National Open isn't even close and adding a 3rd race just for the sake of doing it, doesn't do anything to make it any closer.

Now you know why "The Nationals" gets 100 or more cars and "National Open" only gets around 50!!

Brian Brown came out two years ago and finished around like 13 I believe, and said he didn't even make enough to pay for the trip or close to pay for the trip.
