HAGERSTOWN, MD. – The 61st season at Hagerstown Speedway officially got underway Wednesday, February 20th with the 23rd Annual Race-A-Rama show at the Hagerstown’s Valley Mall where nearly forty participants brought their race cars for display.
Although there were hopes of getting it’s opening race in the record books, that didn’t happen as the speedway canceled Saturday’s late model and big block modified Syracuse qualifying event even in advance of the snow and freezing rain that moved into the area on Friday.
That same weather pattern provided an opportunity for the Race-A-Rama show to be extended an additional day and ended Saturday night when trophy awards were presented to drivers of the top three appearing cars in each of the regular competing divisions plus an overall best of show award.
Leaving with the top late model award in last years show, Marvin Winters of McConnellsburg, Pa. received the Best of Show Award this time with the #46 Black Bandit late model owned by Tex Shaffer of Mercersburg, Pa.
In late models, the top three trophies went to Scott LeBarron of Dover, Pa., Al Shawver Jr. of Hampstead, Md. and Hagerstown’s Alan Sagi, who took over driving duties of the second LeBarron entry.
Late Model sportsman winners were Richard Walls of St. Thomas, Pa who repeated as the top winner with his 25th Anniversary car, Tyler Armstrong of St. Thomas and Pete Weaver of Williamsport, Md.
The three pure stock trophies went to Greencastle, Pa.’s Wayne Hawbaker, Charlie Pensinger of Shippensburg, Pa. and Hagerstown’s Randy Kline.
As another reminder, next Saturday, March 1st, Hagerstown will again attempt to open the speedway with a 30-lap double feature Octoberfest Qualifier program for late models and the Northeast big block modifieds. The modified winner will get a bonus as that victory will also reward him the guaranteed Syracuse starting spot for the mid October mile event.
ALL shows are scheduled Saturday with Sunday used as a possible back up date for any weather related issues. This policy is in effect for the next three programs where modifieds are part of the program.
Warm-ups begin at 1 p.m. with race time approximately 1:30 p.m. Gates open at 11 a.m., pit gates at 10 a.m.
