SUMMER HEAT INTENSIFIES WITH HUGE MONTH OF AUGUST AT BIG DIAMOND RACEWAY…By Gary Lileck
Forestville, PA – July 28, 2008 – The month of August will prove to be the hottest 31 days of summer, as Big Diamond Raceway prepares for seven huge race dates.
The month kicks off this Friday August 1 in an event sponsored by Schuylkill Haven Body & Fender and Denny’s Hot Rod Bar and Grill (Cressona). The American Racing Drivers Club (ARDC) Midgets make their second appearance of the season at Big Diamond.
The popular wingless midget-car series made their previous BDR start on June 5. Randy Monroe Jr. narrowly defeated Steve Buckwalter in a contest which went right down to the wire. The 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, and Roadrunners continue their chase for the championship as part of a four-division card this Friday August 1. Gates open at 5:00PM, with racing at 7:45PM. Grandstand admission is $14 for adults, and $12 for students, seniors, and military. Children 10 and under are free.
The second running of the Chad Miller Memorial is scheduled for Friday August 8. This event honors a young man who tragically lost his life in an automobile accident last summer. Chad worked on the Glen Hyneman owned #126 358 Modified pit crew and was involved in racing during his entire life.
Numerous sponsors have jumped on board for this event, and are graciously supporting the Chad Miller Memorial race. The 358 Modifieds and Sportsman are scheduled to compete in cash dashes along with an increased payoff in their A-mains. The Roadrunners are also on the card. It all begins with a pre-race party hosted by BDR’s co-track announcer Pete Knappenberger at 5:00PM. An auction will also be held during the pre-race festivities.
A three-division show of 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, and Roadrunners takes place on Friday August 15. It will be the third annual Pepsi Challenge for the 358 Modified division. The Pepsi Challenge is a very popular event with the race fans. The top drivers in points battle in one-on-one match races. An overall winner is eventually decided. Jeff Strunk is the defending winner.
The Naftzinger’s Used Auto Parts/Detweiler’s 24 Hour Towing Nutty Buddy Enduro Series swings into town on Sunday August 20. The tour hopes for sun filled weather as two events have been canceled due to rain this season. This will be race number three of 2008. The 6/8 Cylinder (Big Cars) and 4 Cylinder (Small Cars) each compete in a 100-lap endurance race. Adult general admission to the grandstands is only $5.
Following a three-division show on Friday August 22, the Alpine Building and Post Supply Coalcracker races will be held on Friday August 29 and Sunday August 31. Friday’s portion is the Sportsman-Modified Coalcracker 50, 358 Modified non-winners race, and ARDC Midgets. Sunday’s race marks the 28th annual Coalcracker 100 for 358 Modifieds along with Roadrunners.
