what was the penalty for this? found this on a national news services website.

Michael Rhone of Benton High School grabs the corner of the mat as he is dragged back by Mason Beckman of Reynolds High School in their championship wrestling match on Saturday in Hershey, Pa. Beckman won the match.

good thoughts but i'm actually wondering what happened. did anyone witness it. on tv they said something about some mat **** (which i couldn't make the word out) that had been going on all weekend. the comment was directly after a whistle for the edge of the mat. i'm assuming now that they said mat grabbing. anyone know what went on?

The wrestler from Reynolds was awarded 1 point. It amounts to unsportsmanlike conduct. First time I ever saw a wrestler do that.

Yes i have to agree this is the first time in 25 years of wrestling that i actually saw someone grab the edge of the mat like this, like stated above Beckman did recieve 1 pt as a penalty point which made the score 2-0 and that is what the final score ending up being in that match. Rhone didnt really do alot to try to score throughout the entire match so i agree wrestle or go home it was for sure an interesting few seconds during the finals of the PIAA PA state wrestling championship.

Just to add if anyone was ever going to do something like this it doesnt surprise me that it would be Rhone from Benton haha!

Congrats to all the Benton Area Wrestlers on bringing the team title back to district 4 wrestling, Benton took 6 wrestles 5 of them placed and they had 3 in the finals with Eric Hess beating a 2 time returning state champion!

i haven't attended our local hs or statewide wrestling for years (20) but this year i decided to watch the finals. what is with all the low scores? nobody seems to be agressive. seemed like it was get a take down and try to ride.

Have anything to do with the Selinsgrove kid winning a State Championship? Get out and see your nephew.

I have been attending wrestling for 45 years and never saw anything like that, however he gave up a penalty point but avoided giving up 2 points for a takedown.

so it was a strategic maneuver? seen my nephew but the 3 hours long matches, not knowing when he's going to wrestle with this pick a weight starting system is hard on my behind. hithf i know your a big wrestling guy. hope you had a great time in hershey this weekend. haven't seen the myers bout yet but he's pretty deserving, he's a freakin animal.

The irony of the call is that it was likely called "Fleeing the Mat" (i.e. trying to get out of bounds to avoid being scored on).
