From walking by and looking at it in the pits, it looked like winters took their midget housing and adapted it for a sprint car. im sure it wasnt just that simple and there was a lot of thought and engineering that went into it, but at a glance, thats what it looks like. the thing is tiny.

I have a hard time believing they removed enough inertia from a ring gear that has a diameter of ~12" to give 11% more acceleration. Especially when there are two tires that are what 36" in diameter? I'd say FanfromMd hit it on the head. The more people worry about the new rear, the more of an advantage Rahmer has.

Andy, if you take a 12" or even a 10" ring gear and cut it down to a 8" ring gear, doesn't that cut rotation, making accelaration quicker? Maybe not 11%, but I can see it being a fair amount. I never took physics but it does make sense to me.

Doug, that is exactly what I was told they did.

It will, I'm just saying I can't believe it's anywhere near 11%. As soon as I get out of class, I'll run through a few quick calculations.

I agree with Andy on this one. There is so much else affecting total acceleration that you would need to do a heck of a lot to gain 11%. I suspect that they may have achieved an 11% reduction in rotational inertia in the rear. Still a significant gain which I would not sneeze at.

heard lucas picked up two of them as well as kinser and a modified driver not sure of his name, heard leppo wanted one but winters did not put them into production yet.and had no more avalible
Live for today for tomorrow is promised to no one

I heard darrah got one and they were testing with Freddy they were to get in each others car too and see what differences each car had. heard this from someone on Freds team

also they were taking an old car and testing to see if any times were that much different.

I was told that the rear uses a hypoid ring and pinion. I didn't know what a hypoid ring and pinion even was so I Googled it. One website says that it takes 6 - 10% more HP to drive it than a standard ring and pinion (spiral bevel) like in a standard Winters rear. Then I found this on Winters website:
Frequently Asked Questions
All Winters Quick Change Rears use spiral bevel ring & pinions, the most efficient ring & pinion available. Pinion placement of a spiral bevel ring & pinion uses less power, is more efficient, and runs cooler than hypoid ring & pinions. Hypoid style ring & pinions create more sliding action, increasing heat and power loss.

I'm confused, how could it possibly have faster acceleration when they create power loss? Here is the link to the Winters website http://www.wintersperformance.com/catal ... ex1024.htm
Have I misread something?

Jack Roush's crew had their hands in this rear when designing it. Stiffer housing, less deflection, the car is more drivable, left and right, lighter overall design...only avail. in alum. as of yet. ring & pinion made out of house. shorter overall length; 4"....One of the biggest tests will be @ WGrove tonight...the dynamics of the rear should :redpepper: :broccoli: :cheers2: :bananadance: be more apparent on a larger track like WG as opposed to the linc.
