You would need a source of energy as a battery, wiring, some way to keep battery charged, a clutch, a fly wheel, now when that car flips what would you worry about first the battery or the driver when spark makes contact with fuel we have fire

The winged sportsman do it. Battery ,flex plate and starter. no charging system for the battery just lock the rear in gear and go. I dont know if the weight of the sportsman makes up enough to equal the compression of the sprint.

USAC already tried and failed at this! Sprints and push trucks go together like Jack and Coke! :thumbright:

Besides if you don't have push trucks who going to run in the cushion during intermission. :laughing7: :naughty:

Super sportsman are carburated, meaning no injector pump, which is driven off the cam from the rear of the engine. No room for a flex plate with an injector pump. Also,a lot of sprint blocks have the stater mounting boss milled off, along with a lot of other excess weight. Most of the people who want starters on sprints are stock car people who think it takes too long to push off, which I timed once,it amounts to only several minutes on a normal race night.I say,if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I always hear about starters on sprints from stock car people!! :ahhh: If the track knows what they are doing, restarting the field is not a problem!! I get annoyed watching stock cars stop on the track, draw a caution, then take off as soon as the yellow lights come on!! :ahhhh:

We ran with the PA 4 cylinder Sprint Car class for a couple of years. The had to have starters and self start and stage. It was great for keeping the show running. We ran an Esslinger Ford with a 10,00 RPM aluminuim dbl. disc clutch a Tilton mini starter and had a special adapter made to bolt the spicer to and adapted a stock aluminum mustang bell housing. We ran a mini racing 12v batt. that we charge constantly whenever the car was not on the track and it had to be contained in a metal box, ours was aluminum. We ran a crank fired electronic ignition system which we could make advanced adjustment for at various rpm ranges including below 1000 rpms which it really helps to retard the timing a good bit when making a high compression, fuel injected alcohol engine self start. We were at 17 to 1......... ;)

This was all very expensive and that was for an under 450 hp engine (same size car).............and we couldn't keep starters or clutches in it. Even at only 450 hp it was always the weak link. Had to change the flywheel to crank bolts all the time or it would tear them out. We even had our cranks modified for larger bolts and used nothing but ARP bolts. It was a real tough deal......... :dontknow:

Getting a starter to turn enough revs to fire an MSD mag should be a real treat. :laughing7:

Also no accelerator pump on injection. You can't just pump the throttle when cranking to give it more fuel to start. All it does is gulp too much air as soon as the butterflies are cracked.
