Sidewinder Sprints – Trail-Way 06/16/12
Young proves experience can be a substitute for horsepower. The summer months are only a week away but the teams arrived at Trail-Way to summer like conditions. The track preparation created a smooth and fast surface. Radar gun speeds entering turn 3 showed the Sidewinders doing 84MPH. (In comparison the 600’s were 76PMH and the 270’s were 72MPH). The feature race results however proved that terminal velocity is no substitute for corner speed.
Heat race action saw Jim Young and Brad Gleason take the wins. Young’s heat race win earned him the pole starting position for the feature. Yarlett forgot to go to the scales after finishing 3rd in his heat and was subsequently dq’ed and forced to start behind the other “straight up starters” but still in front of the
“fast fives” for the feature. This was a sign of more “scale drama” later in the feature.
The feature got underway with Young shooting to the lead with star substitute Jared Esh in the Stahl # 5J taking up 2nd. The racing had an early caution when last week’s winner, Brad Gleason entered turn one to hot and tagged Jerry Strausbaugh resulting in both spinning on lap 2. On the restart Young once again bought the field in at a slow pace trying to utilize his gearbox ratios to the max and was again able to get a quick jump on the field. Jared Esh tried hard to reel Jim in and at times he looked to be gaining ground slowly. A lap 18 restart for a Brandon Yarlett bunched the field. Once again the seemingly magnetic attraction between Strausbaugh and Gleason saw contact in turn three resulting in a hard hit to the outside wall and a twisted chassis for Strausbaugh. The checkers flew and it was Young followed by Esh then hard charger Seth Kearchner in third. Unfortunately Esh’s great performance was for nothing as he was Dq’ed for being a mere 4pounds light at the scale. In a sign of true sportsmanship Esh took full ownership and explained that he wasn’t sure how much fuel he had in as he was using an unfamiliar fuel stick.
For the second time this season in Sidewinder competition the giant killing Young savored his time in victory lane “ Many thanks must go to Adams Performance for producing such a potent engine. I have been fortunate to have the support of American Racer and their tires really hook my car up. My Guhl Motors fuel injection worked flawlessly and helped with the slower starts by providing the smooth acceleration. Aero Wings provide my down force and their product is second to none.”
