Whary takes two in Path Valley Micros
The Sidewinder Sprints are a 1000cc Micro Sprint series that also allows Micro Sprints with unlimited engines up to 750cc compete with them. This allows the 600cc Micro Sprints a chance to run multiple races in one night. Steve Whary took the opportunity on Saturday night and for him, it was well worth it.
In the first of twin fifteen lap Sidewinder features Keith Ford returned to action for the first time in 2014 and showed no signs of the layoff, starting first and leading all fifteen laps to score the win. Steve Whary stayed close and pulled alongside Ford with a few laps remaining, but could not complete the pass and had to settle for second. Third, fourth, and fifth went to Ben Houtz, Mike Zielonis, and Brandon Yarlett.
Justin Williamson controlled the 4-Cylinder Thunder Car feature, starting first and leading all twenty laps for the win. Charlie Stallman stayed close early on, but fell about five car lengths behind, finishing second. Randy Stull showed good speed late, coming on to finish third, ahead of Brandon Seibert and Justin Rasp. The race was red-flagged twice for rain. Stallman was the heat race victor.
Williamson's brother, Chris Anderson followed suit in the Mini Stock feature. Anderson started on the pole and easily led all twenty laps, lapping all but second and third place, and leading by over a full straightaway. Anderson refused to submit to a post race inspection, earning a disqualification. That gave the win to Barry Welch, with Mark Grove second, Dillon Wilson third, Ronnie Buck fourth, and Korey Washinger fifth. Heat race wins went to Buck and Grove.
The start of the second Sidewinder feature saw Mike Zielonis grab the lead on the first lap from his second place starting position. Steve Whary started fourth and quickly found the outside groove to his liking. Whary drove around Zach Overmiller for second on lap two and then chased down Zielonis, making the winning pass on the outside of turn two on lap five. Whary was uncontested the rest of the way, and his combined finishes gave him the overall win for the night. Zielonis finished second, with Ben Houtz again in third, and Zach Overmiller fourth. Rohan Beasley, Sidewinder president, finished fifth, but did not report to the scales, so he disqualified himself, giving fifth to Keith Ford.
Drew Ritchey appeared to be the man to beat in the ACMS Stock 600cc Micro Sprints after winning the heat race, then drawing the pole position for the feature and taking the early lead. Unfortunately for Ritchey, his speed would not last. Gunnar Layton started second and was only a few car lengths behind when he began to close in on the leader as they neared the halfway point. Just before they took the crossed flags indicating halfway, Layton used the high groove and powered around Ritchey for the lead. Ritchey's night got worse when he spun out in turn one with three laps to go. After the final restart on lap eighteen Layton pulled away to score the win, followed by Buddy Hines, Jesse Howell, Sean Garman, and Ritchey.
An unusually small turnout for the 270cc Micro Sprints saw Levi Peck take the early lead after starting second. Pole-sitter Josh Stoyer stalked Peck for several laps and then worked the inside to pass Peck as they entered turn one on lap seven. The rain returned for the third time during the features, this time causing the race to be stopped just after they had completed ten laps. Since the race had reached halfway, and the low number of cars, and the impending threat of more rain, the race was considered complete. Stoyer was declared the winner over Peck, Jason Houtz, Zach Glass, and Chad Ward. Stoyer also won the heat race.
Once the rain stopped and the tracked sufficiently dried the 600cc Micro Sprints came out for their main event. It appeared Timmie Barrick's 2014 string of bad luck was going to end after he won his heat race and pulled the pole-position for the feature. Barrick led the thirteen-car field to the green and set the early pace with Steve Whary not far behind. The only caution of the event slowed the field on lap fourteen. Barrick's struggles returned when the front of his top wing collapsed while they were still under caution, forcing Barrick to the pit area. Whary took full advantage of the situation, leading the final seven laps to score his second win of the night. Arron Spahr worked past Brad Weber for second on lap sixteen, but could only slightly close the distance he was already behind Whary and finished second. Garrett Bard finished fourth and Jim Young came from starting in the rear to finish fifth. Whary won the other heat race.
Ken Singer started second in the Street Stock feature and quickly jumped out to a sizeable lead before Khi Swanger and Tom Wakefield made contact on lap three, giving both drivers flat tires. Greg Moore was third on the restart, but quickly dispatched Ridge Bookwalter and set his sights on Singer and the lead. Moore caught up to Singer at the halfway point and was following right behind, looking for an opportunity to pass. On lap thirteen Singer's car got slightly loose exiting turn two and he was slightly sideways with the rear tires spinning as he went down the backstretch. Moore thought he had his chance, but when he went for it the two leaders made contact and Singer spun out. Moore was charged with the incident and sent to the rear while Singer restarted back in first. Singer then led the remaining laps to earn the win, followed by Josh Gustaf, Moore, Bookwalter, and Rob Harling. Heat race wins went to Moore and Gustaf. Moore was disqualified after the heat race for not reporting to the scales.
