Photos from the King of the West 410s

Post by RT88 » Thu Oct 01, 2015 7:51 pm

Back from California watching the King of the West 410 Sprint Cars at Santa Maria and Ventura raceways. Santa Maria is a quarter mile and Ventura is a fifth-mile.

These two are from Santa Maria. One is the KWS sprint cars lined up for time trials. The second shows the track. The area where the speedway is located is in the middle of a severe drought. Those mountains in the background are brown because everything has died. The river through the city of Santa Maria is completely dry.

The main part of Santa Maria. Not a bad facility and probably one of the friendliest I have been to. After the races a track employee was at the gate thanking each person for attending the races.

Second photo, these taken by my brother inlaw Bob, is Dominic Scelzi backing 'er in into turn three. Dominic is looking for a ride with the PA Posse. The kid has loads of talent and really wants to race here. Heck of a nice person!

Listed as being in the top five for most beautiful race tracks in the world it is the Ventura Raceway. The fifth mile oval is right along the Pacific Ocean. As the one photos shows, taken off the top of the turn one grandstands, the beach is behind the parking lot

Tyler Walker with the No. 88 at Ventura. Walker wins the feature.

The four wide pace lap at Ventura. It was really hairy because the straights at Ventura are narrow. They did two laps four wide but the inside cars were part way into the infield

I can not believe Walker has been allowed back in any kind of race car. The track owner better have very good liability insurance.

Wow, I can't believe they race 410's on such little tracks.

The 410s put on a heck of a show on the small tracks. Both Santa Maria and Ventura are dirt and not clay. Ventura starts out real dry for practice. They then dig up the entire track and water it. As the show goes the ocean tide comes in and the water comes up through the track surface. During intermission you could see the track get wetter and wetter without them adding any water.

Here is another daytime shot of Santa Maria. The second is a night time shot from turn three of Ventura after the races

Not sure the future of Ventura. They had a tough year. Now they have a 10 curfew and he has to cut classes for next season. Naylor did have a big crowd for the King of the West show.

Not racing but a big thrill - not far from Ventura Raceway the Navy Blue Angels were practicing for several days. They put on a free show on Sunday. On Thursday we parked at the end of the runway and had two Blue Angels buzz us about 25 feet above the car. man, what a thrill. The pilot of plane 4 is from Hummelstown.

Seen the blue angels a couple times at air shows, way cool. Williamsport used to have big air show back in the 80's and they were there and the Army golden knights.
