Phila. Crown 100

Post by crzee_27 » Fri Feb 01, 2008 4:13 pm

1972 USAC/ARDC Philadelphia Crown 100 in J.F.K. Stadium.

#27 Smokey Drulette, a female driver we had never heard of and haven't since. A big deal was made of her appearance, and the ride was in the ARDC car of the Toth Bros. I've always said that she had a resemblance to Janet Guthrie, I only saw here with the helmet on.

Semi race between #4 Bob Wente,#96 Gary Bettenhausen,#5 Jerry Wall,#28 don't know.

Lined up for show time. #66 Johnny Mann, #22 Jimmy Kirk.

#55 Doug Craig

The #4 was a neat rear engine car built by Jerry Wall. I think he even built the V4 Chevy engine for the car by cutting a small block in half. Really had a sound of its own.

I wish I could tell the Story of how Jerry Karl raced at Silver Springs 100 Lappper in 1971 under an alias,as He was in USAC at the time. When He told us the story I was thinking, dang I wish I could record this. He had us laughing as only he can.
I`d mess the story up so bad I`m not going to take a crack at it. :?

Hey Buildy, do you recall if Jerry ran this Crown race? Seems to stick in my mind that he did.

As Far as I can remember,no.

We do have a bit of bitterness over something that occured in 1969,though.
HARC had a racing series that was scheduled to only run races at Hershey. Jerry was leading the points, still was in the lead after he started champ car racing. Somehow, another race, this time at JFK was scheduled and Jerry never even heard about it and he ended getting outpointed at this race he didn`t even realize was going to happen. :?

Worked out great for McAndrews, not so hot for us......

There seems to be several tracks bearing the "Yellow Jacket Speedway" name in the Philly area. The original was at G Street in Frankford and then the last Yellow Jacket was the 1/4 mile inner oval at Langhorne built in 1951...
