In the late 1970s I started going to the races at Silver Springs and quickly became a fan of a dark green #88 super-sportsman driven by the late Maynard Yingst. I continued to follow Maynard's career as he moved to 410 sprints. When I became a fan of Maynard's I was about 10 years old. Looking back now I wonder who owned the car Maynard drove at the Springs? Since it was the #88 I guess it may have been Gary and Patty Beam but I was hoping someone on here could shed some light on this. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I never asked, but I always thought that Maynard & His Family owned / sponsored the car... I know him and Joey Gravino were School Buddies and were more or less Team Mates when they both raced Sportsman... :cheers2:

I have two pictures of the car and the main sponsor on the wing was the Gingerbread Man restaurant.

The G-man might have been on the car but I think that Maynard & His family owned the car. I know His brother Kermit owned a masonary buisness and helped out $ wise... I have pictures packed away of a 28 of Gravinos and 88 Sportsman of Maynards that look almost identical... I don't think Gary and Patti owned his Sprint Car the first few Years, they were just his sponsors.. :cheers2:

The owner of that sportsman MIGHT have been Don Dowell (sp?) from Enola. Back then, he owned three sportsman cars - they were either numbered 86, 87 and 88 or 87, 88 and 89. My late sister-in-law's ex-husband, Dave Erney, drove one of them, Don drove one and someone else (perhaps Maynard) drove the other. All three were white with dark green and gold trim.

not sure who owned Mangli'n Mange's car ,but i'm quite sure Dave Erney ,raced the 'Bandit' in the,'at the time' early modified division, in a Rambler. a sharp looking car too, deep purple and gold striping,#52.and the crew wore purple work overhauls, and black cowboy hats.

Glenn Comp drove the Rambler Bandit in 1975....that thing sounded good with the pipes sticking out the front fenders. The Champ that year was an orange number 6......Comerer left him have it... :cwm4:

Didn't Bob (or Dave?) Canulli (sp?) drive the 88 car after Maynard....the 88 was always a green car and Gravino's 28 purple...??

I know Dave drove one and Fred Locke drove another one of them. Have to look up the numbers.

Yes - Fred Locke was the third driver!

Dave drove a few hobby cars but achieved his 15 minutes of fame in his own black and white 1950 Oldsmobile 88 #130 named "Gentle Ben." Glen Comp built a cheater engine for it and they never were caught because what Gene did was supposed to be impossible - install the newer better-breathing cylinder heads on that car's older-design block. Glen welded head bolt holes in the block shut and drilled new ones to match the later-design heads. It took a lot of finagling with the coolant passageways and such but it ran and ran well. When Dave got the sportsman ride, "Gentle Ben" took up residence in a ditch on my in-laws' farm. The farm was sold years ago but I'm betting that car is still down in that small ravine.

You're getting old? To me, 64 is the new 30.

He did - it was short-lived, however. It seems the car owner's funding came from less than legitimate sources and when his little industry was shut down, so was the racing team. I'm going to guess that all this transpired in 1970.

Dave also briefly drove a sprint car. After the 1972 flood, he and Glen bought Sam Armstrong's #74 that was in Lloyd's shop when Hurricane Agnes hit.
