Raced there in '65 . We used to flat tow over the mountain . It seemed like a hundred miles from
Hummelstown . It was a neat little racetrack - a bit like the old Anthracite Speedway . As I recall ,
they ran Sunday afternoons so there was no shortage of dust . They always seem to have a large crowd ,
but there was not much of a fence around the spectator area - most people just walked in - made for a poor front gate . I can't remember Goldmine running past the flathead days .

Gold Mine Speedway opened on May 11, 1952. It was run by the Twin Valley Racing Association.

Some of the top drivers at Gold Mine included Bick Bickelman, Bill Miller, Hal Lord, George Speck, Lauden Potts, Mel Kreiser and Allen Wertz.

Track raced into the mid 1960s. It closed several times during its lifespan only to come back to life. I have some photos of the Silver Spring Sportsman cars there in the mid 1960s. Towards the end they would have the Silver Spring flathead hobby cars race with the flathead Gold Mine sportsman.

In 1954 Jackie Harper's coupe went flipping. He came flying out of the car and landed on the track surface. Somehow he was not hurt. In 1953 Hal Lord and Gerald Zechman went across the finish line dead even. Officials could not decide which driver won the feature so they had a match race between the two. Hal Lord won the match race and was given the feature win.

Reddog - did you run your stock car with the Gold Mine Sportsman or was there a race just for you guys? By the way Reddog I have the new Silver Spring book finished if you want a copy.

Here are some I've collected along the way. Probaly got some from RT88 and the other oldtimers I hang around with. I was also promised a collection og Goldmine stuff. Guess I'll have to get back on it.

I also have newspaper articles from there including a big win by Charlie Bubeck who was later killed at Reading.

The articles I have from around 1952 had cars coming to Selinsgrove from Goldmine and they started to win. There was a mention of inspection and all of a sudden those cars didn't appear in the results again until late in the season. My guess there were running the 100hp Ford engines when Eastern Penn Racing that sanctioned Selinsgrove had rules for the 80 hp engines.

As a youngster growing up in Tower City (actually Orwin) I spent alot of time on the weekends at Gold Mine. My dad(Checkie Coleman) delivered the soda to the track and my mom (Vera Coleman) was in charge of the soda stand during the racing events..Also my uncle Wayne Leitzel raced there for several years. I am pretty sure the last race held there was in 1968. It brings back some really great memories :D .........Dan Coleman Jr.
