Irvin grew up in Gaithersburg, Md on a diary farm. The King Farm was a real landmark in that area. He started attending the races at Condon Speedway in the 50's. His racing career got started at Dorsey Speedway in the Hobby class around 1961. His first car was a 1939 Chevy coupe, painted red and white, but with the number 586. He switched to the Limited Sportsman division in 1962 in a 1932 Buick also #586. He won 2 features at Dorsey in 1962.
In 1963 he moved to the Modifieds and at some point changed the number to 86.
His career progressed to the Bugs and Sprints in Central Pa. and Maryland.
