Old racetrack is no more

Post by jebubb » Wed Jan 02, 2013 5:34 pm

For those who like visiting the old speedways, another one has gone the way of the shopping center. The site of the Tunkhannock Fairgrounds which ran in the 30's has been "developed". The old track sat right long rt 29 south of Tunkhannock, PA just south of the airport. The track became a farm and some farm buildings were built on the front stretch, but most of the track was still visible. You could see it from the road as the one turn was right against the road.

Has it been developed more? There was a shopping center there about two years ago when I was there. Couldn't find anything that looked like remains. I was told there was drag racing at the airport in the late 60's early 70's.

Yeah, I hadn't been up that way for a bit and the shopping center was built about 2 years ago. Both turns and the one straight were clearly visible before that. All completely leveled now. The tree line at the SW edge of the parking lot marks turn two and the start of the back stretch. The north turn was tighter and was tucked right against the intersection of Rt 29 and the road that goes back to the end of the runway. I know the track raced midgets and big cars in the late 30's.
