Question about bugs

Post by mississippimike » Tue Apr 22, 2014 11:00 am

I love the bugs (30x90) of the mid-60's you guys got to see race. Did they have trans and clutches or in and out boxes?

Both. Depended on the year and the Track rules at the time.

Bugs back in the days only had transmission and clutches (Silver Spring Bugs or sportsman ) Sprint car bugs had tube frames and in and out boxes.

Sprint cars didn't run weekly in Central Pa until the late 60's. Before that they ran bugs (super modifieds). While Silver Spring cars ran clutches and transmissions, most of the other tracks ran in out boxes. The bugs ran with the sprints into the 70's.

Which brings up another interesting question, who ran the last "Bug" at which Speedway, and what year? I know several guys were still running their bugs in 1971, Billy Wertz comes to mind, as well as the Weld built bugs of Paul Pitzer, and Benny Kauffman. But who ran the last one against the sprinters?

I remember Harry Boyer running a bug with the sprints at Reading in the mid seventies.

I can't say this for sure but I think Pete Swarmer was one of if not the last to win in one.

How about in the early 70's, when Paxton parked his "sprint" car and brought out his old 30 x 90 that Weld built and kicked some but.

In the mid 70's Bobby Abel brought his last "bug" to Lincoln on Saturday Nights...wasn't very competitive

about 5 years earlier, in 1970, Hal Browning, driving my father's bug (it really was a really heavy sprint car in a wedge shaped body), won 3 features and finished third in points at Lincoln.

I was at Clearfield the night Swarmer won in his bug.
