Late Models at Penn National question

Post by RT88 » Mon Dec 07, 2015 10:54 am

This one photo is raising a number of questions. The photo is Carl VanHorn at Penn National Speedway. Looking at the background it is clearly Penn National. The photograph was stamped by the processing machine with a date of 1971.

Now, behind VanHorn's car is the Gary Snelbaker No. 43. Penn National opened in 1971 racing the RSCA modifieds. Late in the year they added the super sportsman for a few shows. Nowhere on their results are there semi-late models. In 1972 Gary Snelbaker won a June 11 semi-late model race at Penn National. Looking at Snelbaker's car it is the 1971 car he drove. In '72 he had the white 43A with the red and blue roof. Also I compared Fuzzy VanHorn's car to other 1971 photos and it matches.

Does anyone know of a 1971 semi-late model race at Penn National? I showed the photo to Barry Klinedist and he is baffled. Barry plans on contacting Gary Snelbaker to try and find out more information. Thanks - Steve

Could Gary and the 43A be there to run with the Mods. I do remember different L=M drivers trying their luck at Reading in their L-M cars. It could be the experiment before they built the 43A Corvair modified they ran next year.

That's possible. I think later on he actually did have a #43a modified too.

Barry contacted Gary Snelbaker and Gary said they did run several late model shows at Penn National in 1971. That is a 1971 photo. I do have a 1972 win by Gary at PN. Now I am going to have to dig to find these missing 1971 late model races.

I looked through many issues of Tri-State Speed Press and did not find any Late Model races at PN in 1971. Modified and Super Sportsman and a Modified and Sprint races. I may not have had all the issues necessary.

That is an awesome piece of news. I never knew that they held Late Model races there in 1971.
