How much do you want to spend? It's hard to give advice without a dollar limit.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

You're best bet, assuming you have a budget in the sub $1,000 range is to find someone who is already shooting and is upgrading their equipment and see if you can make an offer on their old gear.

Be prepared to spend quite a bit of money depending on how serious you want to get. It's like they say when you start racing..."How much will it cost me to race ? That all depends on how fast you want to go." Same applies to photography.

Hi racefan
I only would like to add to Gregg 's list of idea's

try out Craig's list . com to see if there is something reasonable to purchase, personally i haven't used ebay

Start out looking for at least a 6 mega pixel camera which will allow you to makea 11x14 if you shoot something you really like to have hanging on yor wall .

stick with a Digitial slr either canon or nikon .

Seeing that you said you are only 14 years old means to me that you are limited on where you can shoot from , that being Williams grove infield ,lincoln infield. (CHECK THE PIT AGE RESTRICTIONS ) maybe you can be there with an adult .

Other equipment
70-200 mm zoom lens 2.8 f stop perferred
18-70 mm zoom lens 2.8 or 4 f stop
A good flash and either rechargeable Batteries or power pack

Race photography can be done on a budget, but it also can be frustrating.
It helps that you make good friends with those out there already shooting .

I have been shooting for 24 years and there are many times when my friends help me out .

Those disposable cameras are a pretty good buy for the money.
