A simple poll;
What do you shoot with, just wondering?

I shoot with a Canon 30D.

No flames please....

Nikon D300 and D200. I may not have a 20 year old lens or a 20 year old flash unit but I think I do OK. ;)

Always looking to do better. If you ever think you're "good", you've stopped trying as much as you should be pushing it because there's always someone right besides you breaking all the rules and pushing the envelopes and creating fantastic results. Equipment has nothing to do with it.

Canon 30D for me. Plus some very good quality glass.

My local camera shop said, always invest in good glass as it will be with you longer than the camera body will.
I agree with Greg in that you should try new angles or shots. Not all work but when they do its sweet. If sunlight and safety permit, I will shoot all over the track.

When I bought my first camera I bought a Nikon - Simply because it was on sale that day. I knew nothing about camera's or photography. Canon makes great stuff and in fact is probably wider used than Nikon on a world wide basis. I will now stay with Nikon simply because everything I own is Nikon and it wouldn't be cost effective to switch over to Canon. Canon makes some incredible equipment though. They both make great stuff!

No matter what you have for equipment, try to learn what it's capabilities are to it's fullest extent. Knowing what the buttons and menus do is critical to getting good shots.
