Sodeman Becomes First 3 Time Winner

Despite a soggy weekend in the Buckeye state, the BOSS wingless sprint car series was able to get one of two shows in. Friday night, the series saw its first 3 time winner in its 20 events to date, as Jack Sodeman Jr of North Jackson, Ohio scored the popular victory at the legendary Lernerville Speedway. A great field of 23 sprint cars signed in for action on the well prepared 4/10 mile clay surface.

Sodeman, known mostly for his winged exploits, would start from the fourth position in the 25 lap main event as Adam Miller and Chad Wilson paced the field to the green flag. However, it was Tony Beaber of Gibsonburg, Ohio from the third starting spot who blasted to the early lead hoping to back up his victory in the last BOSS race 2 weeks prior at Pittsburgh Motor Speedway. Beaber wasted little putting distance between himself and Adam Miller who ran second early followed by Brandon Spithaler.

The race's first caution flew on lap lap #3 for a stalled race car. On the restart, Sodeman blasted from 4th to 2nd exiting turn #2 and began to put the pressure on Beaber for the lead. Sodeman appeared to be by Beaber, but the race's second caution flew on lap 4 for a spin by Brandon Cornelius. Beaber would lead Sodeman, Mike Miller, and Brandon Spithaler down to the restart. Once again, Sodeman appeared to be ready to make the winning pass, but this time the red flag would fly on lap #6 as Michael Fischesser's car lost power collecting Chuck Wilson and sending Michigan's Steve Irwin on a wild flip.

This time, on the restart, Sodeman was able to make the winning pass stick, leaving Beaber to fight a 3 way battle with Brandon Spithaler and Mike Miller. But once Spithaler cleared Beaber to claim 2nd, the Evan City, PA crowd favorite began to reel in Sodeman. During the race's longest green flag stretch, Sodeman's car appeared to get better as the once shrinking lead began to increase once again. A final caution flag would wave on lap 18 for a spin by Adam Miller who was running well in the top 10 setting up a 7 lap race to the finish and giving Spithaler the shot he was looking for.

Over the closing laps, Spithaler appeared to close on Sodeman in 3 corners of every lap, but Sodeman Jr was getting such a run off the bottom of turn 2 that he was able to increase his lead lap after lap. In the end, Sodeman would cruise home with a 2.156 second victory over Spithaler, Mike Miller, Tony Beaber, and Kirk Jeffries who rounded out the top 5 finishers. Chad Wilson was able to steal the 6th position on the final corner from Aaron Middaugh as ageless veteran Johnny Beaber held on for 8th over Brandon Matus and Gale Ruth Jr who completed the top 10.

Sodeman, who had already picked up 2 Lernerville wins with the wings on, was asked in victory lane about the difference in running without the wing. Sodeman's reply was "You just need a lot more stability (without the wings) so you stick your right front and right rear out as far as you can and pray a lot".

In preliminary action, Michael Fischesser of Cincinnati, Ohio scored his first career BOSS heat race win with a convincing victory in heat #1. Sodeman made a last corner pass on Steve Irwin to score the exciting win in heat #2 and Aaron Middaugh scored a convincing win of his own in the third and final heat of the night. Middaugh also became the last man standing with the BOSS series to have perfect attendance in not only participating in every BOSS race, but also making the main event field in all 20 shows to date.

The Saturday evening show at Sharon Speedway was just about ready to begin with 22 cars signed in the pit area when a hard rain shower hit the facility forcing the evening's cancellation. The series has now seen 6 different winners in 6 events. Next up for the BOSS series is the Saturday, July 20th event at Waynesfield Raceway Park.
