You're reading too much into it. The King will always be the King but the fact is, age HAS caught up. Its not an insult, its a fact of life. Look at how long it took compared to most other drivers? He was one of the best well into his 50's. Most drivers can't say that. He is a 59 year old chain smoker who isn't exactly a fitness nut and he's racing against competition that is much younger than him and in much better shape. If you're not at your absolute best, you can't expect to beat guys like Schatz, Pittman, McMahan, Dollansky etc. who are in their prime on a regular basis. He even said himself that he needs to shed some pounds. If he does I'm sure it will make a difference but I just don't see him ever having a real good year again. I hope I'm wrong and he comes out next year (if he doesn't retire) has and awesome year and goes out on a high note but I don't see it happening. Are there problems with the car? Maybe but him and Scott Gerkin have been together for a long time and won a lot of races together. I just think the King is done. That simple. That being said, I think we should all still appreciate every time we get to see him race because obviously he won't be doing it much longer. Don't get me wrong, if things go right, he can still win a race or two which is more than you can say for most drivers his age. In fact most guys retire long before age 59 so the fact that he's even still doing it is a testament to his greatness.
Way she goes.............
