They went fast, but you didn't miss much in the racing department. Sammy's TMC car was one bada$$ lookin' car back in the day. Looks like a younger Don Ott standing in front of the Weikert car.

we were in swindells trailer at the open the year he built the special car for the mile tracks. he had it on the second level of the trailer...that was when he was using the ex-nascar hauler and you walked directly under the cars that were on top...we got a real good look at that car from a very unique vantage point and spent some time talking with sammys dad.
we also found out that not all the aerodynamic tricks were easily seen.

one of the first guys to build special bodywork for syracuse was steve smith...he built a wedge nose, low body panel car and with no testing, finished second with it the first time out...i guess that kinda amazed all the modified reporters. they obviously didnt know how much of a "thinker" steve was/is.

i use to enjoy the speed, and watching some of the "balls out" moves that some of the guys would try.....and i would go back if they ran them again...but towards the end, there was such a mixed bag of cars trying to run there that it started to get dangrous...the outlaw guys would come up on cars running 30-40 mph slower and that is what caused sammy to wad up that special mile car...during practice....

Made one trip to "Sucaquce" in 89 for the ground-round nationals. The only exciting thing I saw on the track was a 130mph wheelie by Paul Lotier after hitting the back of Ed Lynch jr.Thought Mackison's car looked great with the ground effects package.

one year we were up there and it was dark....as in DARK....no lights and still running time trials for the sprints....everyone in the pits was bitching about how unsafe it was....then you hear this car coming down the front straight ballz out...NO lift into one and all the way thru two, down the back and into three....again, no lift...WFO and pitch F'n black....out of four past the flagstand and it comes over the PA system...steve kinser just set fast time....day-uum....from where i was standing..all i saw was a real fast white car....going thru the dark at 130mph.....then coming back thru the pits...he almost hit a push truck

C4, remember that like it was yesterday. Couldn't believe what I saw or heard. I once asked Steve how the heck he did that, and he said he just put his left hand out and kept it on the inside guardrail. I had never seen anything like that before, or since. :jiggy:
WWHD? What would Hewitt do?

marty,
were you there the last year the outlaws were there when kinser pulled off another miracle?
they were screwing with a poorly running motor during warmups. they changed stuff around, went back out and it was still running bad. they had one motor left and 12 minutes to change it before the feature. they started calling him over the pa system and told him that if he didnt get his car to the front straight for introductions, he would start last, instead of second.
here comes the 11 being pushed up with guys running along side, kinser in the car and two guys hanging off the car...all the while working on the motor. they finished it up during introductions, the cars pushed off, took the green, kinser went in on the outside, never lifted and just checked out....
after the race they loaded up and went to rolling wheels where he proceeded to blow that last motor in hotlaps......

lots of "interesting" stuff went on at syracuse...some of it was even race related ;)
