Looks like the Dragster in the first pick suffered a minor clutch failure. :shock:

The last picture was Jim Nicoll's crash at the US Nationals in 1970. His clutch exploded, which cut the car in half. It was the final round of eliminations, Don Prudhomme was the winner.

It was a clutch explosion in his own front-engine dragster that prompted "Big Daddy" Don Garlits to build a rear-engine TF'er, and not long after that, everyone had switched over to that configuration. Very cool collection of pics, Kevin! I wonder where the body ended up on the funny car in the second pic? :shock:

Saw that on TV-Prudhomme very shook up afterwards said he would never race again.

Nitromethane is a harsh mistress.
This scene at the Legendary Lions Drag strip in the LA area in 1968 is forever etched in my mind.
The entire bottom end and crank and pistons blow onto the ground just coming off the line.
