So much for safety! :roflmao:

A glass winshield & look at the mounting of that battery!

How about that fire proof suit

The chicken wire around the engines was to help protect the spark plugs and wires from flying dirt/mud/rocks.

The chicken wire was to keep the stones off the spark plugs. The old flatheads had the spark plugs exposed. One stone and a couple of spark plugs would be sheared off. The battery mount was the standard location for many of the jalopies. Some of the teams sunk the battery inside the top of the firewall.

Really great photos, thanks - Steve Bubb

Leroy was my favorite when I first started going. He was driving for Hackenberg Chevrolet out of Turbotville Pa. They had two modifieds and a 57 Chevy Late Model. Gene Kahn drove the other modified. Not sure of Gene's number. May have been 7x or maybe 6??????????????? Hackenberg Chevy also supplied the pace car back then. My dad was friends with Pete Hackenberg, so that's probably why I like Leroy. My dad was no fan of Roy Richwine and had a few trips to the tower to voice his displeasure with his decisions. As I remember Roy liked to smoke big cigars and always had one in his mouth. Those were the days, when a local dealership, corner gas station or a body shop could put a car or two on the track with no problem. Lynn Paxton was driving a late model and a modified for Tony's Store and Garage in Stonington Pa. A little village about half way between Sunbury & Shamokin. Ed Spencer was driving for Comfort Brothers in Fishers Ferry Pa. He also had a modified and a late model. I was lucky enough to have sat in the grandstand at the Grove. I sat in it as pictured and with the roof off. The roof had different colored rolls of roofing which really made it stand out.
