In 1960 I think there was just a cable run along the turn four standing area. Maybe it was a pipe, I was only five. That is where I watched from and I doubt I remember prior to that although I have been going since 55. After that they had a woven wire fence before the catch fence that was extended after the wheel and axle stuck the fan on the concret bleachers. But what Brent said about the post saying it was back by the school, that would have been a stretch. I aways heard it was about where the first road is, that the tire cleared the crowd up close and and stuck the girl back where the parking started. I also think Brent is right about the piston being from a tractor.

My Dad ,Grandfather, and Uncles were Port Royal Regulars from the late 40's to about 1972. As a Matter a fact My Uncle Ray Beasom owned quite a few buissness's in Thompsontown. They all even camped In Mexico at the Campground along the river.
The Piston was from a race car not a tractor. I am sure he knows the diff. between a tractor and a race car. Like I said probably before your time. Now about the tire and wheel. He did say it went over the bleachers down from where he,his dad and Uncle were sitting,(could point out their seats in the second photo Top Corner near the covered Grandstand) the wheel and tire bounced a little ways almost to the exhabition building before hitting the woman. I am not got to argue about it though. Brent's just a Mr. Knowitall

Hey Slink...... read your post . It said "out by the school ". And yes , I KNOW it wasn't "out by the school ". :dontknow: AND , I said the piston from a "race car" was a new one to ME . I DO remember a piston from the tractor. Never did I "argue" about your second hand info.

It's all good Brent. I may have miss understood where he was talking about. He said by an exhabition building where we park, and that one is by the road., but he meant the one behind the bleachers and Grandstands. :thumbleft: :cheers2:

I had friends sitting in the top row of the bleachers toward the fourth corner and they said the wheel went almost directly over them. At the time I am pretty sure it was just the railing in front of the bleachers.
When the little girl was killed, the wheel hit the fence near the fourth corner and climbed up and over the fence and cleared everyone sitting at the fence. That was not the only time that happened, but I believe only vehicles were the causalities then.

My dad told me the other day that My Uncle Ray Beasom owned and operated the french fry stand behind the grandstands for many years. He hired people to work it while he watched the races.
