Sidewinder Sprints – Kearchner gets first blood.

Perfect weather caught teams unprepared with many cars still in the garage. The short field that did however attend the 2012 opening day enjoyed unseasonably warm March weather. The Trail-Way track surface looked like more banking had been added and it was super smooth under the trying daytime conditions.

Jared Esh, subbing for Jason Stahl in the 5J, got off to a great start taking the lead into turn one. Kearchner and Beasley followed. For the next ten laps Esh did everything he could to hold off a challenging Kearchner before Kearchner found a way past. At that time it looked like Esh tried to make a wing adjustment and mistakenly hit the kill switch in the unfamiliar car forcing him to drop multiple positions before getting back up to speed. Jim Young took the challenge with his 600cc engine and made his way into 2nd before spinning coming out of turn four. The battle for the top 5 positions for the first 10 laps was intense as the cars were nose to tail searching for faster lines.

Jason Eisenhart had a tire deflate on lap 13 brining out the only caution for the day. That set up a 7 lap dash to the checkers with Seth Kearchner making the most of it and taking the win. Mike Zielonis made his way to 2nd and just held on as his right rear deflated over the last 2 laps. Beasley came home 3rd ahead of Zach Overmiller and rookie Brad Gleeson.

A jubilant Kearchner shared “It’s the best feeling to have the first win of the year. I had a thought in my mind that if a win didn't come soon that my mangled and bent top wing from 2011 that earned several wins would go back on, despite its wrinkles. Now I know I can win with a new wing from Aero Wings. This year’s first race was special as it happened to fall on the same date as my son Lincoln's birthday. Being only 3 years old he really enjoys the trophies and he put the pressure on me to win a trophy on his birthday. With a little bit of luck and a really good running car I pulled off a very memorable win for my son. We have really found the right setup in my 2003 Probe. Barry (Probe Chassis) has this car dialed in to perfection and it shows as we have been able to win the last 3 Sidewinder Sprint races held here.” When asked about his plans for 2012, Seth continued " I have to say a big thank you to Rohan Beasley for doing all the work behind the scenes to have a great traveling series to compete in and thanks to the help from PR2 Racing, American Racer Tires, Lincolnway Powder Coating, DB Communications, His Place Inc, and Napa of Taneytown. The #30 Sidewinder Sprint will be competing for the 2012 Championship and couldn't be off to a better start. Please visit http://www.marriedtomotorsports.com for more team information and updates.”

This week’s question;

Q. Rumor has Jim Young utilizing a 600cc engine against the 1000cc Sidewinders this week. Perhaps Jim is hoping the normally slick daytime conditions will work to his advantage. Can Jim squeak out a top 5 finish ?
A. Almost. With the extra torque of the 1000cc at a disadvantage on the slick daytime surface, Jim was able to drive into 2nd before spinning coming off turn 4 and finishing 7th.
Next week’s question;

Q. With a newly shaped Path Valley surface widening the racing groove and the fast five format in place, will the daytime surface allow one of the fast fives to take the win ?
