Be ready to get about a 5 percent keeper rate if you do try them at 1/40th...

Different strokes for different folks. There's no limit to art and photography is no different.

A disappointingly correct assessment! Not gonna get too many keepers at 1/40th (or at 1/80th, hell), but that's what I'm there for! I love the challenge of it. It doesn't help that the 5D doesn't have a very good FPS capability; I can only fire off about 4 shots per car per pass-by. Frequently I'll junk all 4! I think they look even better when they do come out though, the slower I go. I'd encourage everybody to try it, even at 1/100 you can get good panning motion. Hell of a lot cheaper than having to buy/power a huge flash, and you can keep the ISO down. Even at night I don't need to go above ISO 2000, which is basically noiseless on the 5DII. :thumbleft: Keep shooting, brothers! :camera:

The 5D is full-frame, right? I think that helps with the DoF compared to a crop body. Even though my 1D is 1.3x I still find I get more of the car in focus than with the 7D at 1.6x.

My thoughts from a graphic artist point of view:

I look at Buildy's shots as technically precise, detailed, surgeon like.

I look at h0rde's shots as artistic, painterly, free flowing.

I love them both. When Buildy puts up his Lincoln 2nd turn shots, I analyze them . . . the details are amazing.
I have replied to h0rde's posts plenty of times because his shots make me feel like I'm right beside him watching the cars fly passed me.

I would like to see the tables reversed too, try the other style and see what the results look like.

Regardless, to all of the photographers I haven't named, this forum is my first stop every Monday, you all share quite a bit of what you do and I appreciate it greatly.

I do graphic art and illustration as a side line, and I'm a design draftsman by trade, I think that might explain why both styles knock me out !!!

I guess I`ll wade in with my opinion. :thumbright:

I enjoy horde`s panning speed shots. Does that mean I am ready to throw my flash away? No,although sometimes the trouble I go through with them makes me want to throw it at the wall.

I think it would be pretty sad if 10-15 photogs came on here each week from the same track with photos or even styles that are identical.

Some of us shoot for the Media and/or sponsors/owners etc. that have expectations of sharp detail in the photos they want. We need flash to accomplish this.

I try to get as sharp as I can while also having tire blur.Do I always succeed? Heck no,but that is what I`m trying to do.

Or like this:

I think Mr Excite said it very well. Both styles are valid.

I have dabbled in AVL low shutter speed stuff. I find very late afternoon/twilight to be my favorite time for it. I`m not steady enough to make it worthwhile except as a change of pace.

My goal is different than horde`s,and that is OK. :thumbright:

perhaps i over-reacted,but i took it as,my atta-boys were meaningless,i just like viewing stuff on here and complimenting on them, all that i see here is dam fine, and i always look forward to the next week's shots.I'll not get into the technical part, cuz i know nuttin about photography, tho,i was quite interested in it when i was in high-school ,but that was quite a while ago. .........................keep um coming, :camera: folks.
