Unless people stop drinking and grow up its a moot point.

I would agree that alcohol will make some people do things that they would not do when unimpaired ( still not proper), but I've noticed quite a number of jerks that don't drink, yelling and jeering. The drunks are just alittle more annoying.
Oh yes, i'm happy when Schatz drops out or crashes out. But I don't bash the guy and yell at him, and I certainly don't want him to get injured.
And I drink my share of beer at the track. Maybe it's the growing up (not old) thing thats at the bottom of this.

I think we need to clarify...cheering over a flat tire or sour engine is ALOT different than cheering over a driver slamming the fence and flipping. :dontknow:

I won't name names but I can remember taking to a driver from Silver Spring Speedway, I had asked him why he
gave up racing so soon? He told me his wife and very young son was approched under the stands one night by
a very drunk man who cursed the driver out using every profane word possible his wife said the man was drinking
from one can and had the rest of the six pack in the other hand, the driver said people like that DON'T HAVE THE
B*LLS TO SAY IT TO A DRIVERS FACE !!! And I agree with him JMO

drivers may have some unkind words between them, but when push comes to shove they will put their own life in jeopardy to help a fellow driver.

As long as it doesn't cause physical harm to anyone i try to take it with a grain of salt no matter how wrong they are! Kind of like being a Yankee outfielder in front of the big green wall in Fenway, you are going to hear nasty things and best be prepared! :dontknow:

Why is this just now surfacing? This has been something that has been going on for as long as I can remember.

My motto still is "Always cheer for all the drivers."

For the Rahmer "boo birds", respect the man as he surely paid his dues last year and proved he is not a quitter. I am not a fan of Rahmer, but I sure do have a lot of respect for the man.

In my younger years, I worked on the crash crew at Trenton Speedway and was there when Don Gillette was fatally injured and Carl Bailey was critically injured and you would never cheer a crash if you saw what I saw with that crash and the injuries Bailey had. He never raced again. His sprint car when the tail was upright the front end was inverted and upside down.

Quit the crash crew when we tried to help get Mel Kenyon back to the pits when he had a flat tire and a USAC official told me, "Get him off the track, I got a race to run." I have a lot of respect for Mel Kenyon after what he gave in a Langhorne crash and I told the official, "Here, you push him out of the way if you're in that much of a hurry." I walked away and never worked on the crash crew again.

You never know who is in the seat near you. Help bring respect back to America, cheer like heck when you see the driver is okay and thank God!

I saw two drivers die at Williams Grove and one at Silver Spring - it humbles you beyond words. My wife and I were sitting at the first turn end of the frontstretch grandstand when Bill Heckert passed away at Silver Spring. The ambulance parked right beneath us and when we saw the EMTs crying, we did too! I sure hope that anyone who was at the Grove when Billy Kimmel was killed isn't cheering when a driver gets into a crash. His removal from the car was a long, drawn-out affair that had the whole place quieter than I have ever heard it.

I agree with cheering for all, and certainly for not cheering at anybody crashing - particularly if you cheer before finding out if the guy is even alive and OK. Anybody willing to strap in and take their chances deserves our respect, as do the crews and owners who put time, money, work, and dedication in getting the cars there and ready to race.

I don't recall where or when it was, or even what sport, but long ago I was sitting near a fellow who was cheering wildly for one team or driver, and something happened that would clearly give the person or team he was cheering for the win. I was puzzled when the guy got very upset. He explained that he wanted his player, driver, or team to beat the best the others had to offer, not to win because of crash, flat, accident, or injury.

And for those who boo and act out because of booze, I'll simply request that if you can't hold your liquor, and keep your cool, drink at home. And for all those who drink, please make sure there's a designated driver to get you and the rest of us who share the road with you home safely.
