When it comes to insanity in racing, nothing could beat the Midget races at the Nutley Velodrome in New Jersey. This was Midgets on a high banked bicycle track with lap times around eight seconds. I read one driver saying that because of such quick laps on the high banks, the drivers would lose all perspective on where they were on the track.

This is the No. 18 of Duane Carter and the No. 2 of Paul Russo at Nutley.

Nutley was a very deadly track with some horrible crashes. I have seen some footage and photos of the fatal wrecks and they were horrendous.

It did - many, many years ago. I believe it was closer to the town of Tipton. When my father, who would be in his 90s today, was a boy growing up in Altoona, he and his buddies would sell programs in exchange for free admission to the races. He told stories about them getting under the track and sticking their heads up through holes in the boards to watch the cars come toward them.

Hard to believe he went on to earn a Master's degree and become a federal agent...

here is a progression of the Altoona Speedways. Petersen Dragway was also there.

This kind of ties into the Lorenze Alwine thread because he won this race.

I don't know how much of a shame that is. Back in the mid-70s when the super sportsmen boycotted Silver Spring, we got a date at St. Thomas. Between the wooden guard rails (if you could call them "guard rails") and the overall condition of the place, no one wanted to go back. The drivers pretty much just idled around the track as those "guard rails" were just waiting to snap and protrute into a roll cage upon impact.

Ed, I am sure you're right about the 70's but the 60's battles featuring two of my favorites (Clem Lamaster & Pete Mitton) were well worth attending :thumbleft: ... that deep burgundy 12 is one of my favorite cars of all-time
