Can anyone tell me the reason for not running a rock screen? Yes i know that small rocks go through the screen but I would think that it would stop a large piece of a car coming in and hurting a driver.

Some drivers and even Cody Darrah have said it is distracting to them.

Stupidity would be the main reason.

Wayne Johnson didnt run one until a rock or mud ball tore the visor off his helmet and broke his nose
earlier this year.

I can understand that but I would think that just like any other piece of safety equipment, you'd get used to it pretty quick. Getting pegged with a rock or big chunk of clay would have to be distracting as well.

i've asked some drivers about spending money on safety equipment and they say they'd rather spend it on something that makes the car go faster. one guy told me he had close to a $1000 in a paint job on his stock car but was debating spending $350 on a HANS device. i told him like i tell every driver i talk to that say they cost too much... how fast will your car go, or how nice will it look sitting in your garage when you're laid up in a hospital. that may not be politically correct but when it comes to personal safety devices why wouldn't you want everthing you can get.

I agree if I was a driver I wouldn't want to get hit in the head with ANYTHING!!!! To me that's like a fan saying this Catch fence is distracting my view of the race. I think I'll go stand on the other side. :buttkick:

Wayne actually caught a muffler in the face. It broke his helmet and came in through his visor breaking his nose. Could have been much worse. Heard him tell the story on Winged Nation back in May.

An 8" chunk of (hard as a rock ) clay came through the nose wing, took out rock guard and wedged between Daryl's helmet and seat ! Could not imagine what would of happened without rock guard! It's Russian roulette if you don't use one!

I stand corrected, muffler would be way worse than a mud ball anyways....

I remember talking to a 410 driver after he got slammed by a rock. He said he could see it coming, but with the way they are in the seat there was nothing he could do. He tried to make himself as small as possible. After that there was a rock guard.

I can never understand why drivers don't want to have the good safety equipment. I was on Dave Cordier Jr.'s pit crew when he had his fire at Williams Grove. The fire was not that long in duration, however it was a real hot oil fire. His racing gloves actually melted into the steering wheel. He was trying to get out but couldn't because of the melted gloves. He had good protection on and still suffered some serious burns. Steve Bubb

I am suprised they don't wear chest and shoulder protectors like a motocross racer. Most every sprint car driver I have asked has said they have been nailed in the chest and shoulders from cars passing to the inside on a turn.

Understandable and true, but you need to pull your belts as tight to your body as you can get them. I have seen Bobby Allen pull his shoulder belts down then wiggle himself down in the seat more and pull them tight again. Belts stretch as it is and the more play between your body and the belt the more they stretch. Montieth's head hit the steering wheel and broke his helmet a few weeks ago at the Grove if you can imagine that stretch. Very lucky as that is exactly what a base skull fracture comes from. I know they are not the most popular thing with drivers but a Hans or similar device is important. My grandson has a small Hans for Cage Kart racing and I wouldn't catch him running without it.
