I'm not sure he was THE first , but he was the first driver I ever saw that used a wheel cover on the RR.

I think Jay was the first that used a rock shield on the right side because of all the stuff flying around at the Port when we ran there. 1976 & beyond.
In 1975 at the Reading opener Jay got hit in the leg with a wheel cover off of a modified while in standing in turn 3 watching the feature. A 1/4 pc of aluminum with a piece of all thread still attached. Off to the hospital on that deal. That thing could have cut somebody up really bad if it would have it em like a frisbee. Fortunetly it hit him in the leg facing straight up & down. After that I believe they outlawed them for awhile.
