When was the last time we saw an Indy 500 Winner in a Sprint car at Williams Grove the same year he won the 500? Here is Pat Flaherty in 1956,when he did just that.

It was probably later than this(Think AJ Foyt) but it hasn`t happened in many, many years.

THANKS for posting - what a GREAT picture.

It would be great to have this kind of connection again. Fans could see their hero at a local track and then see them at the famous brickyard. Even NASCAR used to have races on dirt tracks and it was a special thrill to see your favorite driver and brand of car out on the track. I cannot thank you enough for posting pictures like this, it re-ignites a fire that was lit when I was so much younger and has burned constantly ever since. It is hard to put into words the memories, emotions and excitement that a picture can bring.

Buildy, Great Picture. Was just a "thought" in that year. But i sure appreciate the history of the sport.

It would be great if something like that were to happen in this era. Although not an American, can't help but think Alex Zanardi could have won in a sprinter.

I have a bunch of old Reading Fairground pics scanned to my computer from my dads old slides. quality is pretty good. Whenever i figure out how to post them, I will share them with all you Great Photogs.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys. :thumbleft:

I have a facebook page where I post all sorts of historic Open Wheel front engine photos and memorabilia. There is a veritable who`s who of racing families Including Rathmann, Ruttman,Branson, Caruso, Agajanian, Rutherford, Flaherty, and more that check in daily to view the posts.

I`d say it is worth a look during the winter racing shut-down.

Yes, that is Sam Traylor. He had as many as 4 Sprints at one time and a Midget and an Indy Dirt car. :thumbright: The 9 car in this photo was driven by Johnny Thomson,Traylor`s favorite driver.

Buildy, Rodger Ward drove in the 1959 Champ car race at Williams Grove, after his first 500 win. Foyt drove after 1961 and 1964 wins in sprints. Parnelli did not drive at Williams Grove, only at Hatfield in 1963.

On this day Pat would win his third in a row, Indy Milwaukee and the grove. He would be seriously hurt at The Springfield mile and not race again for 2 years.

Sam Traylor was one of the great owners of our time. A few years back his wife was on hand for a round table discussion at EMMR. Goose Ruth has one of Sam's cars in partial restoration. I believe Musselman was also one of Sam's drivers. Great stuff Buildy!!

Sam had many drivers. In addition to Charlie M who took to the air at Langhorne, his drivers included Wally Campbell, al Herman, Al Keller, Mike Magill , Van Johnson and of course already mentioned Johnny Thomson who won two Easter Sprint titles for Sam.
