Re: Hamilton 77
Todd ran the 77 the year after he announced his retirement. He started in the 5W and T.J. Stutts was in the 88. After Todd split with the 5W he sat idle for a few weeks until Hodnett was injured. I believe Todd's first night in the 77 was during speedweek (maybe Selinsgrove). Todd drove for Al until late August (including Knoxville). At that point he went back to the Beam 88 who had split with T.J. around the time Todd started filling in for Hodnett.

I knew you were on the wrong track from the beginning.SLINKMASTERC wrote:VA Mudslinger wrote:The picture from 7/28/06 is after the night that is in question. The night in question Sammy Swindell was supposed to run the car, but for some reason decided not to run the rest of the night, and Lance Dewease ran the car that night. Then Todd Shaffer became the driver after that night. Dewease qualified the 25 car that night, but had problems with it, and jumped in the 77 car after Swindell was out of it.

I went back to an old issue of AARN and read were it says Lance filled in.

What threw me off is I knew Shaffer was in the car in around that time frame. I was close the rest is right. So I didn't totally bomb.

It was Lance. During the rain delay Al called down and said "give Sammy a thousand dollars and take his seat out of the car. Put Lance in it". I remember that conversation vividly...

and I recall a moment of unmatch irony as Lance took to the track with Sammy's decal removed and the "LD" from a modified Weld decal in its place...clearly visible from the top rows of the VIP section!
as a recovering sammy fan...I laugh to this day of that moment...knowing SuperN8 was thinking on his feet and being creating with what he had on hand.

It was Grandview. Billy was still running ninth well after the halfway point but picked off a car (or two) a lap and passed Alan Cole (Sorokach 35) on the white flag lap only to have the cauting come out. Pauch drove by him again on the green, white, checker restart and pulled away. He looked pretty uncomfortable in the car early in the race but didn't want any changes under the red, just a cigarette!Vigilante 19 wrote:How about the 1 time ride deal Al gave to Bill Pauch Sr (that same year?)..I forget if it was Grandview or Diamond...I know I was there!..Cool deal

Oh, and Al gave him 100% of the winnings that night too... I remember counting out and handing him 35 (or was it 53?) bills...

Re: Hamilton 77
there is one thing people have said about pauch over the years....once he settles down and thinks he can win, he always finds a way. i have seen him pull off some pretty amazing stuff when he looked like he didnt have a chance in the world.....that night at grandview was one of them. once he got going, he drove around some of the top names like they were nothing.....just adjusted himself to what the car was giving him.SuperN8 wrote:It was Grandview.
