How does a sprint car owner pick a number for the car?

Can you just pick your favorite number?

Do you have to register and pay for a number?

Are all numbers available or are you assigned a number?

How easy is it to change a number?

I'm just a fan and don't know squat about being an owner.

I just appreciate all car owners for their donation to the sport.

Driver or owner can pick any number he wants. #'s are not given if they were there wouldn't be 10 # 66's or 6 #1's... ;) They can also change the # if they want. Some owners have even changed # mid season. The 13 Lefler ran at one time was a 13 then 31, and then back to 13. If there is more than one lets say #2 at an Outlaw show. For scoring they may add a letter to the # usually the first letter of the driver or owners Last name. Hope this helps.

Example of # change Before Rahmer went to the 51 it's # was 69 with Mike Carber behind the wheel. When Fred went to CJB They changed the # to 51 for Fred as that was his Fathers # and the # he started racing with.

He uses his birthday, the year he was born, his high school basketball number, he doubles his number as a pure stock owner when he moves to sprint cars, the amount of money he made his first year racing, he and his co-owner each pick a digit or he has to shorten his coupe number. :D 88, 29, 10, 88, 0, 123(12)

There is usually a story connected to most numbers.

My cousin Ryan Mohn, who passed away in a car accident, was born in 1987. He was the starting quarterback for Steel-High Rollers. I changed my number in go-karts the year he died from 60 to 87 and it stuck when we moved onto 358's.

I'm working on building a street stock for either next season or the following season... My wife and I got married on 4/30/2011, so my number will be 45... I used 4+30+11= 45...

I remember reading where the original number of Walt Dyer's car was 46 and at one race there was already a 46 so they added a 1 to it and gave birth to what would become the legendary #461.

Numbers are mostly emotionally attached to the owner in some form or fashion. We started with #20 when Derek started racing go karts in 2004 due to his favorite driver Tony Stewart who was with Gibbs at the time. When we moved up to sprint cars in Arizona in 2008 there was already a #20 so we had to add the "s" to the number.

Who knew all of these years later the 20s would be driven by Fast Freddie Rahmer with such a great retirement season. I know the #51 is just as special for Fred and his family.

Thank you for giving that “washed up, old no-driving SOB" A quality ride this season. It was awesome to watch Fred go out on top the way he did. Congrats to everyone involved on such an awesome year and best of luck in the future.
