FRIDAY'S WINTER STORM MOVES GROVE OPENER TO MARCH 2
MECHANICSBURG, PA -- Opening Day for the 2008 racing season at
Williams Grove Speedway has been rescheduled for Sunday afternoon, March 2.
Sprint car racing will be the sole attraction on March 2.
There will be no time trials. Qualifying heats will be lined up by
the luck of the draw.
The first heat is scheduled to start at 2:00.
Friday's winter storm, which closed schools and caused hundreds of
airport delays and cancellations, sealed the fate of the originally
scheduled February 24 opener at Williams Grove.
The cancellation was made Friday morning by general manager Justin
Loh. With more snow and sleet expected along with subfreezing
temperatures, neither the parking areas nor the racing surface would
have been in acceptable condition by Sunday afternoon.
"With frost still in the race track, we couldn't have given the
drivers a good racing surface by Sunday," Loh said. "Also, the parking
areas could not have been ready either. Under the circumstances we felt
an early cancellation would allow the fans and the racers an opportunity
to plan their weekends accordingly."
While February 24 may have appeared to be an early date for racing
in Pennsylvania, Williams Grove has opened even earlier in the past.
The earliest opener occurred on February 21, 1999, and was won by
Mechanicsburg's Brian Paulus.
The speedway also opened in February on two other occasions. Greg
Hodnett was the winner of both races on February 24, 2002, and February
29, 2004.
Williams Grove will present sprint car racing, weather permitting,
on Sunday afternoons through March 15 before switching to Friday nights
on March 21.
