Gravel Rockets To Morgan Cup Finale Checkers At Williams Grove Saturday
Mechanicsburg – World of Outlaws point leader David Gravel blasted his rocket ship to the win in the 30-lap Morgan Cup Finale for sprint cars at Williams Grove Speedway on Saturday night.
The convincing victory for Connecticut’s Gravel was the 10th of his career at the speedway, worth a total of $20,000 for a flag to flag victory.
Seemingly the only driver who may have been able to compete with Gravel in the 30-lap main was Justin Whittall aboard the Rod Gross Motorsports No. 67G.
Whittall started fourth in the field and raced third behind Friday winner Kasey Kahne and leader Gravel for the first 18 laps of the event before Kahne started fading while Whittall’s car got faster.
It was just after Kahne slipped over the turn four cushion that Whittall drove into second and began biting into Gravels advantage.
With seven laps to go Gravel had a 1.5 second lead over Whittall and with each successive lap his challenger was slicing between two and three tenths of a second off of the margin.
With three to go Gravel’s lead had shrunk to .750 seconds at the hands of Whittall however time ran out for him to attempt a pass as he instead crossed the finish line just .542 seconds behind the winner while surging toward him.
As a result of Gravel’s Morgan Cup Finale win, the Morgan Cup trophy itself will now take up residency at World of Outlaws headquarters in Concord, North Carolina for the next 364 days.
The Morgan Cup contest is run each year with both bragging rights and the home of the Cup determined by which contingent of drivers claims victory in the event, either an outlaws driver or a member of the locals known as the Pennsylvania Posse.
Friday night winner Kasey Kahne earned the pole for the Saturday feature with Gravel starting second.
Kahne fell to fifth at the finish after fading during the races final 10 laps.
New Williams Grove point leader Troy Wagaman Jr. rode home third followed by Sheldon Haudenschild.
Sixth through 10th went to Carson Macedo, Freddie Rahmer, Ashton Torgerson, Danny Dietrich and Bill Balog.
Heats went to Gravel, Kahne, Whittall and Chad Trout.
Kahne won the dash to earn the pole for the main event and Daryn Pittman won the B Main.
For the second night in a row Gravel set overall quick time with a fast lap of 16.431 seconds.
